Start with the prep guide
Preparation is crucial to a successful headshot session. That is why every client receives a thorough prep guide after booking. It covers wardrobe ideas, facial and hair preparation, and what we are trying to achieve, so there are no surprises on the day. This article is the short version.
The week before: choose your wardrobe
- Choose clothing that reflects you and your field. In general, dark, solid, muted colors photograph better than bright colors or busy patterns. Neutrals such as black, gray and brown work especially well.
- Bring options. It is a good idea to bring more than one outfit so we can find what works best together on the day.
- Check fit and condition. Everything should be well-fitted, freshly ironed and free of wrinkles. Form-fitting pieces photograph better than baggy ones.
- Take care of grooming. If it has been a while since a haircut or trim, handle that before your shoot.

The night before
- Sleep. Get a good night's rest. Tired eyes show up in photographs.
- Lay everything out. Iron your outfits, pack accessories, and put your glasses with them if you wear them.
The day of your session
- Arrive relaxed. Allow extra time so you are not rushed.
- Arrive clean and fresh. Our makeup artist handles the finishing touches. Your prep guide explains exactly how to arrive.
- Glasses. If you want to be photographed in glasses, bringing frames without lenses, or glare-free prescription lenses, helps us get the cleanest shot.
- Keep jewelry simple. Less is better. Anything that distracts from your face is a risk.
What to bring: a quick checklist
- Two or more wardrobe options, ironed and ready
- A neutral layer or jacket to change the look quickly
- Glasses (frames only, if you want them in the photos)
- Any grooming items your prep guide mentions
- Your prep guide and any questions you have
